The 2021 vintage is hailed by many within the wine industry as the pinnacle of the 21st century, surpassing even esteemed years like 2009, 2015, and 2017.
Seasonal conditions played a pivotal role in shaping this exceptional vintage with moderate temperatures during flowering, fruit set and the initial growth phase, followed by a later and cooler than usual ripening phase, ensuring ideal maturity at harvest. Lower yields led to grapes of higher concentration, characterized by intense flavour, freshness, and a fine tannin structure.
Crafted from a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon (48%), Merlot (46%), Cabernet Franc (5%), and Petit Verdot (1%), each parcel underwent meticulous vinification before harmonizing in barrel for a total of 18 months. The result is a wine where the more mature Merlot vineyards shine, contributing to a balanced and captivating final blend.
On the palate, the Rubicon 2021 exhibits a deep, dense colour with a quintessential nose of violets, ripe plum, cedar wood, and intense spiciness, underscored by hints of liquorice. Full-bodied and structured, yet brimming with fresh dark fruit and rounded tannins, seamlessly integrated with oak.
With an aging potential of 10 to 20 years under ideal cellar conditions, the Meerlust Rubicon 2021 promises an unforgettable journey of discovery for enthusiasts and connoisseurs alike.
