Shop Meerlust Estate's Most Iconic Red Blends

We present two of the most iconic Bordeaux red blends from Meerlust Estate in Stellenbosch that are available to shop in our online wine store, tastewine: Meerlust Estate Red 2021 and Meerlust Rubicon 2021.

New release: Meerlust Estate Red 2021

The Meerlust Estate Red, initially introduced into the range in years only when the Rubicon wasn't released, has now become a permanent wine of the range.

Produced completely from estate-grown fruit, it's often a combination of younger vineyards on the estate and more approachable sites, with less oak aging thereby creating a more accessible second label wine from Meerlust Estate.

Tim Atkin MW recently scored the Meerlust Estate Red 2021 91 points, commenting:

"The Meerlust Red has hit volumes of 140 000 bottles and has been a noticeable success. Led by Cabernet Franc, with a supporting chorus of 25% each of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot and 14% Petit Verdot, this uses grapes from young vine parcels. Mint, graphite, and red berries combine to get effect here, embellished by a lick of oak."

Last of a great vintage: Meerlust Rubicon 2021

The 2021 vintage is hailed by many within the wine industry as the pinnacle of the 21st century, surpassing even esteemed years like 2009, 2015, and 2017.

The Meerlust Rubicon 2021 has earned prestigious accolades, including a five-star rating in the Platter's South African Wine Guide and 95 points from Michael Fridjhon.

This Bordeaux red blend is crafted from Cabernet Sauvignon (48%), Merlot (46%), Cabernet Franc (5%), and Petit Verdot (1%). Each parcel underwent meticulous vinification before harmonising in barrel for 18 months.

The result is a wine where the more mature Merlot vineyards shine.

Aging potential of 10 to 20 years under ideal cellar conditions, the Meerlust Rubicon 2021 promises an unforgettable journey of discovery.
